A thin brown film of stone and sand covers the canyon roads as the sky starts to finally break free of its early morning capturers. The sunlight quickly jacks the temps but does little to ease the burden of the dirt on the asphalt. Hitting the crest of Piuma Canyon Road, it’s clear that weeks of rain have cast their own kind of textured shadow over these hallowed grounds. The Santa Monica Mountains are flat out filthy. A mud flapping four by four in a two-wheeled world.
Yet as the old man and I work our way from the coast towards The Rock Store, bouncing up and down Saddle Peak, over Las Virgines and eventually throughout Mullhulland, I find myself feeling surprisingly at ease. Had I encountered this sort of obstacle ridden adventure-style ride when I first started whipping the throttle back on a bike it would have certainly taken me out of the moment, yet today for whatever reason it doesn’t. Instead I find myself actually relaxing as the bike bounces over the bumps and bruises on the road surface. It’s a surprisingly calm and serene mindset. One that’s hard to imagine myself feeling and yet surprisingly easy to latch on to. It’s simply a light traction kind of day - there’s absolutely nothing I can do about it except to accept it - and soon as I come to that realization everything else seems to almost magically takes care of itself.
Perhaps it’s simply the mental space I’m in at the moment as we finish the Twist The Throttle and prep for the next project, but the idea of ‘letting go’ and ’simply existing’ for awhile feels awfully nice. Awfully nice indeed…More picts after the jump…
