Coming Down From The High
Ok, so is anyone else feeling a giant sense of lethargy after yesterday’s 1098 unveiling? Are these the post-bike introduction blues? After months and months of anticipated build up, I find myself feeling somehow emotionally wiped with regards to Ducati Superbikes this morning. No doubt the debates between the 916-998 contingent and the 999 group have raged through the night, but seriously — now I’m left wondering what bike lies in my immediate future??? Do you get in line and pony up for the 1098, realizing full well that you’ll be dealing with a first generation Ducati (probably not the smartest decision on the face of the planet, but a cathartic emotional response for sure) or do you start eyeing the classifieds and local used dealer stock for smacked down prices on say a last generation 749R (great bike, lots of tasty bits, unique styling that I like)??? So many choices and yet so little decisive qualities… What a strange day in the land of the Ducatista…

A dilemma shared by many, I’m sure. I’m a little disappointed by the 1098’s styling and the mechanicals will need a year or two of sorting, as you implied. I feel sorry for Ducati in that everyone expects Tamburini-esque magic that evokes the gobsmacked “Holy Shizzle!” reaction EVERYONE had to the 916 while avoiding the “What the hell?” reaction a lot of people had to the 999. The mechanicals and most of the styling of the 1098 are great but it’s the “face” that isn’t quite dazzling. They tried to create a bridge from the 916 to the Desmoseidici and ended up bridging a Daytona 675 to a generic Japanese sportbike. Despite my personal opinions, I hope they sell a ton of them. Ducati’s stock is over $11/share and I say Forza Ducati!
