Role Reversal: A Day In Front of The Camera At SEMA

SEMA 2006 Discovery Turbo Cars Hot Rod Automotive

Seeing SEMA for the first time has been an interesting experience. For starters there’s a tremendous amount of automotive excess, performance and pure artistry to see. There’s also a plethora of wonderful motorheads who can’t wait to take five to chat about what they do. Perhaps the most interesting part however was a total and complete role reversal for myself - Discovery Turbo asked me to step in front of the camera and take viewers around the exhibition space…

This is an ironic twist for someone (namely me) who always wanted to get into the ‘Television Business’, because I never spent any amount of time pondering what it might be like to step in front of the lens. I’ve spent the past years creating documentaries and shooting them, becoming ‘talent’ for a day simply wasn’t on my personal radar - so when the folks at Turbo brought it up I didn’t know what to think about it or really what to expect because it never was a personal ambition or desire. But like many things, it’s the surprises in life that often offer the most unexpected enjoyments.

So while it was a bit out of the ordinary to know what I was doing and saying was being recorded - it didn’t take long to forget the camera was there and simply enjoy being able to shoot the shit with some remarkable car industry folks.

We were able to spend some ‘quality’ time with the likes of Ralph Gilles (the designer of the Chrysler 300 & the Dodge Magnum), Boyd Coddington (’American Hot Rod’), and several truly amazing ‘tuners’. In addition it was a blast to survey the 1 million square feet of exhibition space at SEMA. You’d be foolhardy to think that you can take it all in at once. Just to put this into perspective that’s roughly equivalent to 175 full length football fields spread out over four main convention center halls.

So check it out and see what you think… Also we shot a ton with the Turbo folks, so I would assume that more clips will follow…
