“Speed On Two Wheels” Coming To DVD

If I’ve seemed rather quiet lately it’s all for a good reason. After a number of months of hard work, I’m excited to finally be able to announce that Speed On Two Wheels is coming to Home Video on DVD!

It’s been an interesting road to get here to say the least, but ultimately the reaction to the show has been so overwhelmingly positive that it seemed foolish not to try and push for this to happen. The disc will feature an Extended Version of the show with over 15 minutes of never before seen footage, including: two entirely new Nick Ienatsch dirt bike sequences that expand on the gyroscopic effect and contact patch segments, some truly wonderful soundbites & interviews with Mat Mladin, Tommy Hayden, Roger Hayden and Aaron Yates - who didn’t even make it into the broadcast cut – that add a wealth of personality, information and concepts to the show, and a host of other small changes and additions.

The finished DVD should be back from the replicator by the end of September and is slated to begin shipping in early October. The disc will retail for $24.95 and right now we’re running a Pre-Order Promotion with Free Shipping on all orders before October 7th.

Personally, it’s been an interesting process to go back and re-edit a show after it was broadcast. On one hand there’s the rather normal sense of dread that comes from picking something up that you already feel like you finished. Yet on the other hand there’s an opportunity to makes subtle changes to things that in retrospect you wish you had done differently. A wise film mentor of mine once said, “no film is ever done, you just put it away for awhile” and these days I find a certain truth in that.

Of course I’d be lying if I said that I ignored the comments that people wrote about the doc on the ‘net – both the positive and the negative ones. I tend to think that anyone who is in a creative field often seeks reaction from the audience. In a very real way it’s the only measure of how successful your endeavor is because creative works are by their very nature and definition completely subjective pieces of work.

But when you go back to re-edit something after reading so much commentary, it’s a challenging tightrope act to create what you feel is the best film while at the same time giving the audience their money’s worth in an extended version. Extra footage or extra content doesn’t automatically translate into a better show. Yet I think in today’s world a lot of consumers have been trained by Hollywood in the “more is better” philosophy when it comes to DVDs and home video. It becomes a very interesting balancing act that you find yourself seeking in the edit suite between creativity and commerce. Ultimately, I think the film that came from this union is a better, more interesting, more engaging variant of the original – but then I’m a motorcyclist and I like listening to cycles guys go into more detail about what they’re doing or what they’re thinking. So on a personal level, it will be interesting to see what others think of this ‘new’ version of the show.
