As luck would have it this is turning out to be quite a week in my professional life. Tonight Speed on Two Wheels aired on The Science Channel and thus far the reviews seem to be rather positive. But the news doesn’t stop there, this weekend a second show that I’ve been working on for a little more than a year is also set to air for the first time.
“Fowl Play” will make its cable broadcast television premiere Sunday Evening at 8 pm (est/pst) on Animal Planet as part of Whoa! Sunday. I have to say that this particular show is one of the best projects that I’ve ever worked on. Hopefully others will agree and enjoy the watch, but ultimately I’m very pleased with how the show turned out. Overall it’s quite a charming bit of TV.
The show is an inside look at the competitive world of show poultry. Yep, that’s right I said ’show poultry’… For the past year when I’ve told people they have tended act shocked, but it’s actually true. People across the country show their chickens on a regular basis. Imagine a dog show, but with some mighty fancy chickens. And not just any old chickens mind you, but some down right amazingly cute, odd, goofy and beautiful birds. Some don’t even look like chickens - well at least not in the classic sense of the white rooster with the red crest. (As a personal aside, after spending countless hours in chicken coops across the country I honestly have no idea what categorizes a bird as a chicken versus being defined as a different genre or species of bird… Though I’d wager that it has something to do with chickens tending not to fly very well… But who knows…).
In many respects it’s a very different kind of Animal Planet show. While there are countless touching moments, the gist of the show is much more in the vein of the film “Best in Show” than the more typical nature documentaries shot in the Amazon rain forrest. If you’re interested you can get more info about the show at the Whoa! Sunday Fansite. The Animal Planet television guide listings can be found here…
Finally, The Rome Observer which is a local suburban Michigan newspaper ran a fun story about the genesis of the show several weeks back. It’s a cute story that’s not even close to 100% accurate but fun to check out nonetheless.

I really enjoyed the program. It’s amazing to me how many folks don’t know that people show chickens… guess they’ve never been to a county fair! Anyway, great work and I’d love to see another show about exhibition poultry in the future. Gotta go bathe a few of my chickens for a show we’re attending tomorrow!
I also missed the show and want to buy a copy, can you let me know by email if one becomes available? Thanks!
Hi there! I, too, LOVED this program!! I would like to be able to show it to some friends of mine, and I would especially love to purchase a copy on DVD. Please pass on any relevant information. Thanks!!!
I’m stoked that so many folks enjoyed the show. Unfortunately I don’t know when - or if - Animal Planet will release the show on DVD. They hold the home video rights and what they do with it is really up to them.
I LOVED the show, it was awsome, will it ever air again? Could i buy a copy?
Thanks,
Blake
Loved the show!!
Hope you do that project again and in a more serious manner too. As you could of focused more on the poultry and showing them. Have judges talk more on showing. Breeders on breeding and conditioning their birds.
All in all a really good job. Where can you buy a copy of the program?
Hey Jim-
