The only constant is rain

So it’s been sort of awhile since I last posted something up here on the ‘ol blog. There are numerous reasons trust me, but ultimately I just haven’t felt like it. LA has been consumed by what feels like an eternal storm. Such a barrage of foul weather, it’s unlike any I’ve ever seen period. I read yesterday in the LA Times that this is the third highest rainfall since 1877 - somewhere close to 30 inches if I recall correctly - and as each passing day goes by, more and more rain falls on the roads that I know and love. It unfortunate, but they’re being completely destroyed. At this rate I doubt the canyons will be back up and running - so to speak - until the end of the summer at the earliest. Whole sides of the canyon roads have simply fallen apart or more aptly fallen off. Washed away, never to come back quite the same as they were before all this nonsense started. Meanwhile my desire to ride grows and grows, yet theres just no place to go. Topanga Canyon, which is perhaps the most built up of all the canyons runs, still is closed for most of the day! It’s funny but I didn’t realize how attached I’ve become to this area & these roads until this winter weather season hit. Whenever I flick on the AM radio and hear about more road closures, I constantly find myself cringing with disbelief. Will they ever go back to the way they were? I doubt it. Somehow it just strikes me that this is one more time where CalTrans or whomever the local authority is will take yet another beautiful curvy surface & make it straighter or less exciting simply in the name of cost savings. Before this is over I fear that the PCH will become nothing more than one gigantic retaining wall running from Santa Monica to Pt. Magu. What a sad, sad time for those of us who love these roads….

Man, I’m right there with you. It’s going on a month since I’ve been able to hit the canyons, and after those rains at the beginning of the year the rides I did sneak in were pretty sketchy. I just hope it ends soon. It would be one thing if we had a day here and there that was wet, but these are the biggest potholes I’ve ever seen in this city. The roads throughout the city are just getting wrecked.
