Phones & Motorcycle Helmets?

I was catching up with several of the blogs that regularly frequent and noticed a post by Mike Werner over at Bikes in the Fast Lane about yet another new motorcycle helmet with a built in phone. This comes on the heels of Motorola’s announcement that they’ve created a similar combo helmet phone.

Now I’m all for technological revolutions and advancements in our daily lives, but come on folks what is going on here? I’ve noticed on quite a few motorcycle related message boards that people have begun talking about these things and frankly I just don’t get it. Why on earth would anyone want to disrupt a perfectly good way to get away from things with one of these gizmos? I keep thinking that once these stylistic devices move into more common ground there will be hell to pay because of the legal ramifications. Cities are already outlawing folks who drive with cell phones planted to their ear because of the attention deficit created and if you factor in the long standing negativity associated with motorcycles in parts of the general public, it’s only a matter of time before some watch group comes after motorcyclists as a whole because some idiot with a bluetooth enabled cell phone went through an intersection and hit someone or something while talking on the phone. This just isn’t a good idea.
