TwistingAsphalt Minor Redesign

Websites like TwistingAsphalt are oddly funny things to manage as it turns out. Over the course of the past few months while the number of visitors keeps growing exponentially and the content keeps building at a prodigious rate, I’ve had a nagging suspicion that the ability for an end user to retrieve previous posts and/or information has gotten a bit lost in the shuffle. I finally more or less hit a breaking point this weekend while trying to re-read some old posts and thus decided that it might be an appropriate time to slightly tweak the site.

For quite awhile one of the largest areas of annoyance for me personally has been the archive section. There was simply no good way to find previous information that had left the front page other than to search through each category, a page of 15 posts at a time. That’s neither the most dynamic nor efficient means to reference content. For a nunmber of months I’ve searched the web for a better solution. Finally this past weekend I stumbled on to a WordPress plugin called Extended Live Archive which offers a beautiful and truly efficient means by which to access previous posts.

After testing the plugin out the past few days I can now proudly announce a new and actually useful Twisting Aspahlt
Searchable Archive
. So if you’re curious to read previous posts you can now sort the archives by category and also by date. How sweet is that??

I’ve also taken this opportunity to clean up the actual category names themselves. When I first created the site I thought it was best to be as explicitly clear as I could with the different category titles. So I had subjects like, ‘motorcycle rides’ or ‘motorcycle reviews’… Over time I’ve grown to believe that since this is in fact a motorcycle blog, then it surves to reason that anyone who reads this site most likely is either a rider themselves or a fan of the sport and there no reason to be so blatent with each topic. Hence the newly trimmed and clearer category titles. I’ve also added a few new categories to cover some areas that previously had been lumped into with the more vauge sections of the site, such as ‘rumors’ and ‘news’.

So the new category list break down as follows - at least in my mind;

  • General : A catch-all section for any motor related site, blurb or photo that seems interesting
  • My Life in TV : A place for my non-riding posts & activities
  • News : A home for Ducati related stories, introductions, PR releases, etc.
  • Reviews : My thoughts on gear & bikes that you may or may not care about and/or agree with
  • Rides : If I go out on the bike this is where the storiy ends up, including trackdays, travels and weekend jaunts
  • Rumors : After posting and pondering several different Ducati related rumors I thought it was time to have a section.
  • Top Rides : The best of the best rides (and perhaps posts) end up here.
  • Now obviously my intention here is to simply help make the site easier to navigate. If anyone has any additional thoughts on ways to further this purpose please feel free to drop me a line or leave a thought in the comment section… :)
