The back page of the LA Times Calendar section a piece by writer Hugh Hart that’s titled, “Swift to make their mark”, about the 2005 Supersonic Art Show that’s being held at the LA Design Center this weekend.
Apparently this is a collaborative event put on by several of the top art schools in and around LA in order to showcase the work of 139 MFA graduates. What caught my eye was a picture of graduate Chris Bassett’s project, titled, “Ascendancy of the Illuminated Ducatisti”, a life-sized Ducati 998 sculpture.
Bassett is quoted in the piece as saying, “When they’re assembled, it’s kind of sloppy and very obviously handmade… You can see the tape that holds them together…”
He concludes, “The whole idea of making hand-built copies of $23,000 is a way to put myself into the Ducati Owners Club, which tends to be doctors, lawyers, bankers. I see it as the modern-day equivalent of the Bavarian Illuminati.”
