I’m not usually one for advocating or imploring folks towards great activism within our political system, however the American Motorcycle Associations (AMA) effort to get a bipartisan bill passed in the House of Representatives caught my eye. The bill, named measure S. 423, would close a Federal Loophole that allows companies to deny health care to their employees if they’re hurt while riding a recreational vehicles.

The quick backstory according the AMA website is that,

In 1996, Congress passed the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), which prohibits companies from denying access to employer-sponsored health insurance for motorcyclists and those who participate in other recreational activities. However, federal regulators created a loophole that allows the denial of benefits under various conditions.

Now, as I mentioned I’m not usually one to tell people how to go about their lives - I tend to figure that if you want to be active in our politcal system you will be and if you’re not interested, that’s cool too - however this seems like the sort of broad activism that just about any motorcyclists can get behind. With that in mind, the AMA has set up a website where you can write your local House of Representative member using a template - i.e. read not a lot of work for those of us who’d rather be out riding - and show your support for riders everywhere…
