So I’ve seen several references to this on other Ducati sites, but I thought it was interesting enough to share. Michael Jordan – yes the one and only #23 MJ – apparently sponsors his own Ducati Racing Team. – Michael Jordan Motorsports. Here’s a link to the Ducati Press Release.
Personally I’m a bit surprised since this is the same guy that earlier in the week ESPN reported as wanting to buy an NBA team, but that he was holding out because he felt he should get a discount since his last name is ‘Jordan’. Repeatedly he’s come and gone in the NBA and that’s where his heart is – I can’t imagine what he really gets out of sponsoring a Ducati. The Ducati Press Release calls him a ‘big fan’ and who am I to put him down for that? But being the guy writing the checks for a new engine or fairing isn’t going to get him any richer. Plus, an independant racing team in todays world only goes so far. So where does that leave him and his team?
So the good news from today is that both MotorMilt & I survived… It was that kind of day on the road. One of those …

I must say, that is a pretty sweet looking bike. And why shouldn’t he get a discount on buying an NBA team? He only has a few billion dollars and needs to save some for a rainy day.

I can only speculate on why M. Jordan would sponsor a Ducati team but I’ll give it a shot. Guess No. is that he actually likes motorcycle racing perhaps because it’s so far from his regular world or perhaps a personal interest that has merely had to take a back seat to basketball and business. Guess no. 2: He’s looking for a top notch African-American rider to sponsor. There has been some effort lately in motorsports, particularly NASCAR, to bring more minorities into tradtionally “white” sports.
Guess no. 3 is that someone knows Jordan, Mike likes them and simply ponies up a bunch bucks to help a friend develop a career. For guys like Jordan, tossing a $100k for entertainment or to help a buddy is no big deal. Remember the mini-scandal of him betting big bucks on his golf games?
I do know that comedian Bill Cosby owns and sponsors a show dog (terrier of some sort) and spends big bucks on the deal even though the dog lives with his trainer and handler, not Cos. I guess when you’ve got more money than you know what to do with, it’s easy to toss some around on idle amusement even if the amount is astonishing to us ordinary folk. Hey, if I was rich I’d sponsor a Ducati team too!!
I recently came across your blog and have been reading along. I thought I would leave my first comment. I don’t know what to say except that I have enjoyed reading. Nice blog. I will keep visiting this blog very often.
